The Latin American Cultural Center welcomed guests, artists, and community partners for a colorful gala celebrating the opening of Crossroads of the World: Panama, a new exhibition honoring Panama’s rich history as a global crossroads of culture, trade, and migration.
The evening began with remarks from Latin American Studies Association (LASA) President Gisela Zaremberg, who spoke about the significance of the exhibition in highlighting Panama’s unique position at the intersection of cultures and its place within the broader story of Latin America and the Caribbean. Luis Carlos García and Federico Ríos Escobar, the artists whose work made the exhibition possible were recognized for their contributions, and shared insight into the creative process and inspiration behind the pieces now on display. Susan Baida, a diversity, equity and inclusion leader in Pittsburgh, also addressed attendees, sharing Governor Shapiro’s proclamation.
The program continued with a musical performance by Amín Carrillo and Luis Orjuela, featuring traditional Panamanian music, filling the gallery with the sounds of Panama and setting a festive, celebratory tone for the rest of the evening. Afterward, guests were invited to explore the new exhibition firsthand, taking in the artwork and stories on display while enjoying a delicious menu provided by Black Radish.
