The Latin American Cultural Center (LACC) is proud to announce The Community Retablo Project: Pittsburgh Journeys, a new art initiative celebrating the migration stories that have shaped our city, made possible with the support and funding of The Pittsburgh Foundation.

Using the retablo a traditional three-dimensional, hand-painted art form from Latin America, LACC will work with Pittsburgh communities to turn their migration journeys into powerful, hand-crafted works of art. Because Pittsburgh is a city of bridges, the finished retablos will come together in a curated exhibition that itself becomes a bridge, connecting the human journeys that brought so many different communities here.
LACC is honored to be partnering with four Pittsburgh community groups, each creating a retablo that reflects their own story: Casa San José, The Afghan women’s community of Pittsburgh, The Ukrainian community of Pittsburgh and The August Wilson African American Center.
The project’s artistic direction is led by acclaimed Pittsburgh sculptor James Simon, known for his community-driven public art across the city, including the Liberty Avenue Musicians and Art on Gist Street. Learn more about his work at simonsculpture.com.
Stay tuned for updates as these stories take shape.
