President Sagasti led a transitional and emergency government from November 17, 2020, until July 28, 2021, the fourth president in a term that began in July of 2016. Widely respected in Peru and abroad, he was elected by his fellow Congressmen to first become president of Congress and then become acting President. He is highly praised for bringing stability to a country dealing with internal strife, a constitutional crisis, and the COVID pandemic.
President Sagasti holds degrees in Industrial Engineering from the National University of Engineering in Lima, Peru, a master’s (MSc) in Industrial Engineering from the Pennsylvania State University, and a Doctorate (Ph.D.) in Operational Research and Social Systems Sciences from the University of Pennsylvania. He has served in several countries such as Peru, Spain, Costa Rica, and the United States. Among other distinguished positions, he was Chief of the Strategic Planning Division at the World Bank and President of the United Nations Advisory Committee on Science and Technology for Development.
